Pulwama circular road garbage site continues to rot months after official closure

Pulwama, Oct 12: A towering heap of garbage continues to rot on Pulwama’s Circular Road, months after authorities officially announced the closure of the dumping site, leaving residents and shopkeepers to battle the stench and sight of what they call a “mountain of neglect.”

The waste mound, several metres high, has become a major eyesore in the area. Locals say that despite repeated complaints, municipal authorities have failed to clear the accumulated garbage.

“This place was supposed to be cleared long ago, but the garbage is still there,” said Abdul Rashid, a resident.

Shopkeepers also expressed frustration, saying the stench drives away customers. “Customers avoid visiting the shops here. The overpowering smell can be detected hundreds of meters away,” said one shopkeeper.

Municipal officials had declared the site closed earlier this year after facing criticism over unscientific dumping practices and the health hazards posed to nearby residents.

However, months later, heaps of household waste, plastic, and construction debris remain scattered across the site.

Residents also complain that the waste has attracted stray dogs and insects, heightening fears of disease outbreaks. “We can’t even keep our windows open,” said a resident living a few metres away. “Flies and smell have made our lives miserable,” added another.

Tafveez Mehmood, Chief Executive Officer of the Municipal Council Pulwama, told Greater Kashmir that the removal process would be initiated soon.

“The machinery is engaged in Pampore. Once it becomes available, we will start the process,” Mehmood said, adding that authorities hope to complete the clearance before the onset of winter.
