Protest held in Kupwara area over damaged transformer

Kupwara, Mar 2: The residents of Buhipora in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district staged a protest against the Power Development Department (PDD) for failing to repair the electric transformer of the village despite the passage of several days.

A group of women staged a protest on the Kupwara-Gushi road, bringing traffic to a complete halt for some time. They raised slogans against the PDD officials for failing to repair the transformer.

“For the past twenty days we have been suffering due to lack of electricity, but authorities are yet to provide us with a transformer,” said a female protestor.

“We have been forced to hit the streets as the concerned authorities have failed to mitigate our problem,” she added.

The protesters said that the area was reeling under darkness for the past twenty days which forced them to stage a protest.

Later a police party and PDD officials reached the spot and ensured protesters of early redressal of their grievances following which they dispersed peacefully.

Meanwhile Assistant Executive Engineer PDD Trehgam Division told Greater Kashmir that during last one month three transformers were provided to Buhipora residents but due to injudicious use of electricity by the locals, the problem arises again and again.

“I appeal to the residents of Buhipora to use electricity judiciously and avoid usage of crude heating gadgets,” he added.

He said that by evening a new transformer would be provided to the residents.
