Srinagar, Oct 31: Underlining the importance of studying and treating sleep-related disorders, Department of Medicine GMC Srinagar and SMHS Hospital today organized a Continuing Medical Education Program bringing together renowned experts to update Healthcare professionals on the latest advances in sleep disorder diagnosis and management.

Speaking about the importance of sleep study, Dr Shabana Ashraf, Assistant Professor Medicine, a neurologist and a sleep specialist who was also the organising secretary of the CME said, "Good sleep prevents the development of hypertension, diabetes, myocardial infarction, other cardiac disorders, stroke, kidney failure and many other chronic diseases. It is also important to maintain the body's immune response." She added that sleep was of paramount importance for mental and physical health and proper sleep was the basic requirement for proper judgement, memory consolidation, memory flexibility and learning. Dr Ashraf said many disorders such as pacity of sleep, increased sleep, sleep-related movement disorder, sleep apnea and others.

The CME was conducted under the guidance and patronage of Principal and Dean GMC Srinagar Prof Iffat Hassan Shah with Prof. Dr Rakesh Koul, HOD Medicine GMC Srinagar as the organizing chairman and Dr Shabana Ashraf as the organizing secretary. Mohamad Ashraf Hakak, Administrator Associated Hospitals; Tahleela Asmat, Chief Accounts Officer and other officers were also present on the occasion.

The scientific program included a keynote address by Dr Rakesh Kumar Koul on Sleep Medicine. The sessions included talks on the introduction of Sleep Medicine by Dr Shabana : Sleep-related breathing disorders by Prof Muzaffar Maqbool (Department of Medicine): Sleep related movement disorders by Dr Irfan Yousuf - neurologist, Assistant Professor Department of Medicine: Drug-induced sleep endoscopy by Dr lhsaan( Associate Professor Department of ENT), Parasomnias by Dr Irfan Shah ( neurologist, Assistant Professor Department of Medicine) and Insomnia by Dr Maqsood Ahmad Dar (neurologist, Assistant Professor Department of Medicine).

Among others, the faculty members of medicine, neurology, surgery, ENT, and psychiatry, Heads of various departments were also present who shared their multi-disciplinary view regarding sleep-related disorders. Dr Bashir Ahmad Sanie, HoD Neurology and Dr Khalid Mohiudin HoD Cardiology, delivered lectures emphasizing the importance of sleep medicine in patient care. HoD Dr Sajad Nazir was also among those who graced the occasion. The CME aimed to enhance Healthcare professionals' knowledge and skills in sleep medicine promoting better patient care and outcomes.
