Tangmarg, Sep 15: A grand book release function was organised here on Sunday in which noted academician and former college principal, Prof Abdul Jabbar Gokhami, released his latest work ‘Luminaries of Greater Gulmarg.’
The book, described as a significant contribution to regional history and culture, documents the lives and achievements of distinguished personalities from Gulmarg and adjoining areas who excelled in politics, education, literature, social service, culture and fine arts.
It profiles figures ranging from Begum Akbar Jehan to celebrated folk artist Muhammad Sidiq Bhagat, alongside several unsung heroes of society.
The function was attended by a galaxy of eminent personalities including former minister Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, MLA Gulmarg Farooq Ahmad Shah, former Deputy Commissioner Showkat Ahmad Mir, PDP leader Shabir Ahmad Mir, historian Abdul Ahad, columnist Ahmad Kashmiri, Gulshan Publishers’ Ejaz Ahmad, JKCSF Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani besides senior officers, former bureaucrats, social and political leaders.
In his address, Sheikh Mustafa Kamal reflected on Tangmarg’s developmental journey, citing the establishment of SDH Tangmarg and the steady architectural and market growth in the area. MLA Farooq Ahmad Shah described Gulmarg as a “world-class tourist destination with unmatched potential and scope,” calling for collective efforts to harness its resources.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Gokhami said his endeavour was to document the contributions of legendary figures of the society, both well-known leaders and forgotten contributors, whose work deserved recognition.
Abdul Qayoom Wani, Chairman JKCSF, raised concern over the alarming rise of drug abuse, describing it as a menace “eating the society from within.” He urged scholars and intellectuals to take the lead in awareness and remedial efforts.
The book was reviewed by scholar Mustafa Sherrazi and Dr Arshid Ahmad Khan, who lauded the work for its academic depth and cultural relevance.
