Pro-India Opposition secures landslide victory in Male’s Mayoral elections
New Delhi, Jan 14: In a significant setback for President Mohamed Muizzu of Maldives, the pro-India opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has achieved a resounding triumph in the mayoral election in the capital city, Male.
Adam Azim, the former ruling party’s candidate from Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), emerged victorious in Saturday’s Malé City Council by-election, defeating the government-endorsed candidate by a wide margin.
Azima Shakoor, the ruling party’s candidate, closely contested against Azim in the by-election, but preliminary results indicate Azim, the former CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), leading the mayoral race with the highest number of votes.
Azima from the Progressive National Congress (PNC) secured the second position, while Mohamed Saif from ‘The Democrats’ party came in third.
