President Murmu unveils Durand Cup Trophies
New Delhi, July 11: President Draupadi Murmu unveiled the trophies for the prestigious Durand Cup Football Tournament at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The ceremony marks the beginning of one of the world’s oldest football tournaments, first held in 1888.
A statement said that this year’s tournament features a diverse lineup of teams, including Downtown Heroes Football Club from Jammu & Kashmir. The club’s management, comprising founding members Mushtaq Bashir, Qaiser Bhat, Hinan Bhat, and Qazi Tauseef, participated in the trophy unveiling ceremony.
Downtown Heroes FC will play the inaugural match of the tournament, highlighting the growing football culture in Jammu and Kashmir.
President Murmu emphasized the importance of sports in promoting unity and fostering community. She praised the Durand Cup for its enduring legacy and role in encouraging young athletes. “The Durand Cup is not just a tournament; it is a celebration of our rich football history and the incredible talent we have across the country,” she said.
