President Murmu presents national awards for empowerment of specially-abled persons
New Delhi, Dec 3: President of India, Droupadi Murmu, presented the National Awards for the empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for the year 2023. The event took place on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu emphasized the commendable role played by the National Awards in empowering individuals with disabilities.
Recognizing both individual and institutional efforts, she underscored the importance of achievers in various fields helping other persons with disabilities to the best of their ability.
President Murmu highlighted that approximately 15 percent of the global population comprises persons with disabilities, making their empowerment a top priority.
She expressed satisfaction with the positive shift in societal attitudes toward persons with disabilities in recent years. The President conveyed confidence that, with adequate facilities, opportunities, and empowerment initiatives, all individuals with disabilities can lead lives of equality and dignity.
Drawing attention to the accessibility of every part of the new Parliament building to persons with disabilities, President Murmu urged others to learn from this example and ensure inclusivity from the outset. She encouraged an innovative approach, emphasizing the importance of proactive thinking over-reactive measures.
Highlighting India's outstanding performance at the Asian Para Games, President Murmu praised the indomitable spirit of the players, citing their historic achievements. She particularly appreciated the inspiring roles played by athletes such as Dr Deepa Malik and Avani Lekhara in pushing the boundaries and setting new benchmarks in para-sports.
