President honoured with prestigious degree by University of Mauritius

New Delhi, Mar 12: The University of Mauritius bestowed upon the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law, recognizing her contributions and leadership. In her address, President Murmu emphasized the pivotal role of academic institutions like the University of Mauritius in shaping the destinies of the youth and ultimately, the future of humanity.

She shared her heartfelt honour in receiving this prestigious award, hoping it would motivate particularly young women to follow their aspirations. President Murmu reflected on her journey, highlighting education's crucial role in transitioning from hardship to opportunity and optimism.

She underscored the Indian government's commitment to youth empowerment through education as a cornerstone for propelling the nation into a leading position in the global knowledge economy. She expressed optimism about India's new National Education Policy, designed to harness the country's youthful energy and innovation potential for the betterment of society.

Highlighting the enduring bond between India and Mauritius, President Murmu outlined the collaborative efforts in education and technical training as pillars of this partnership. She noted the significant number of Mauritian students benefiting annually from scholarships and training programs under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) scheme.

Reaffirming the close ties and strategic partnership between India and Mauritius, especially in the maritime domain and within the Indian Ocean Region, President Murmu looked forward to further strengthening this relationship. She expressed confidence that the younger generations of both nations would continue to deepen and enrich the enduring friendship and cooperation that has long been a hallmark of the India-Mauritius relationship.

On her inaugural state visit to Mauritius, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, was warmly welcomed upon her arrival at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on March 11, 2024, by the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, along with key members of his government and high-ranking Mauritian officials.

During her visit, President Murmu's first official act was to meet with Mauritius's President, Prithvirajsing Roopun, at the State House in Le Reduit.
