Pope Francis hospitalised
New Delhi, Feb 19: Pope Francis, 88, is hospitalised, and according to the Vatican, he is being treated for a respiratory infection in both lungs at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. Doctors say he has a “complex clinical condition” and will stay in the hospital as long as needed.
The Pope was admitted on Friday for tests and treatment for bronchitis. On Monday, the Vatican said he has a “polymicrobial infection” in his respiratory tract, requiring a change in medication. Despite his condition, he remains stable, has no fever, and has been doing some reading and work.
Francis expressed gratitude for the many well wishes he has received, especially from other hospital patients. He asked for prayers and assured everyone he is praying for them too.
The Pope has faced several health issues in recent years. Last March, he was hospitalised with bronchitis, and in June, he underwent surgery for a hernia. In January, he fell and injured his arm but recovered quickly.
His usual Wednesday audience was cancelled this week. Many people in Rome have been sending him messages of support, praying for his speedy recovery.
