Over the past many years, the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) has pointed out poor learning outcomes of the students, raising questions on the academic standards in government schools.

The learning outcomes of the students have repeatedly failed to improve despite the huge investment by the government in terms of budgetary allocations.

The previous National Achievement Survey (NAS) held by an independent body in December last year also pointed out weak learning levels of the students as well.

The poor learning outcomes have raised questions about the prevailing teaching learning methodology in schools. The issue about the poor learning levels among the students came to the fore during a day-long conference in National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 in Baramulla.

The officers of the education department said that apart from holding conferences and sessions, the focus must be on improving the learning levels of the students, particularly at the elementary level of schools. Speaking at the occasion, Deputy Chief Education Officer (CEO) Baramulla, Iftikhar Bashir, said that Kashmir was lagging in terms of improving the learning levels of the students.

"If we look at the National level, we are far behind, and at the UT level, we have not performed well," he said.

He said the previous National Achievement Survey (NAS) held in December 2024 also raised questions on the overall teaching learning process due to the poor learning outcomes of the students.

"Talking about Baramulla district, we have performed fairly only in 2 subjects in class 8th that include Science and Social Studies," he said.

Over the years, the School Education Department (SED) has shifted focus to training of teachers and to adopt the new teaching methodology, which goes in sync with the NEP-2020.

However, the poor learning outcomes of students have remained a persistent problem.
