Kashmir is also known for its magnificent water bodies. But unfortunately some of these water bodies are badly getting affected due to pollution. Despite the concerns expressed by certain quarters, and environmental experts, nothing concrete is being done in this direction.

The condition of some water bodies is deteriorating due to callous approach of people, and the concerned departments. According to reports the Sindh Nallah in Ganderbal district too is a victim of uncontrolled pollution. Sindh Nallah is a source of fresh water, and home to the trout. But the apathy at official and unofficial levels is hitting it too. Garbage is dumped mercilessly from Wayil area to Sonamarg.

Sindh Nallah is also important since it is the major tributary of the River Jhelum. It contributes to irrigation of agriculture and horticulture land in the area and hydropower generation besides supplying drinking water to Srinagar via the Rangil Water Treatment Plant. In view of its significant relevance and importance, Sindh Nallah has to be protected from the increasing pollution.

Awareness campaigns must be run in the areas for this purpose. The people should be advised not to make this prestigious nallah into a garbage dump. Those doing so must be strictly dealt with. It is not about the Sindh Nallah only. All other water bodies that are under threat due to pollution have to be safeguarded. While steps are being taken in this direction for protecting some very famous and major water bodies, but such measures should be there also for all the water bodies in Kashmir.

They too need attention and care of people and concerned authorities. These natural gifts must not get damaged and wasted. The future generations will not forgive us because of the serious problems they can face due to the extinction of water bodies. We are already facing shortage of drinking and irrigating water. This problem is getting aggravated with every passing day. If water bodies are protected these problems can also be controlled.
