New Delhi, Aug 7: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday issued the formal notification for the Vice Presidential Election 2025, setting in motion the process for electing the next Vice President of India. The notification dated August 7, 2025, has been published in the Gazette of India and is being simultaneously re-published in the State Gazettes in their respective official languages.

The election will be conducted under the provisions of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and as per the Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections Rules, 1974.

The last date for filing nominations is August 21, 2025, between 11 am and 3 pm.

Office of the Returning Officer (RO), Room No RS-28, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi, is the place for submission of nominations.

Scrutiny of nominations would be held on August 22, 2025, at 11 am at Room No F-100, Sangoshthi-2, First Floor, Parliament House.

The date of the poll, if required, is September 9, 2025, between 10 am and 5 pm at Room No F-101, Vasudha, First Floor, Parliament House.

Each nomination has to be accompanied by a certified copy of the candidate’s electoral roll entry, confirming they are a registered electors in a parliamentary constituency, a security deposit of Rs 15,000, payable either in cash to the RO, or deposited in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or a Government Treasury, a receipt of the security deposit, and the nomination paper, which can be obtained from the RO’s office during the designated hours.

The Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, who serves as the Returning Officer for the Vice-Presidential Election, has published the public notice under Rule 3 of the 1974 Rules in Form 1, providing all procedural details.

In the event of a contest, the polling will be held on September 9, 2025, as per the Election Commission’s schedule.

The Vice President of India is elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament, using the system of proportional representation using a single transferable vote.
