Police went extra mile in Anantnag to stem surge of drug abuse

Anantnag, Jan 1: The Jammu and Kashmir Police in Anantnag have registered significant achievements in its anti-narcotics operations during 2024 registering 123 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The police arrested 185 accused and seized property worth Rs 26.40 crore in connection with these cases.

According to data shared by the police, 102 of the arrested individuals were charge-sheeted in court.

24 detentions under the Prevention of Illegal Trafficking (PIT) NDPS Act were reported in the district.

The contraband substances recovered included, Brown Sugar 1.64 Kg; cannabis (Bung powder, Bung Fuki) 510.648 Kgs, Charas 2,641 Kg and Poppy Straw 510,648 Kg.

“ Intoxicant tablets; 300 strips and intoxicant syrups; 1350 bottles were also seized.”

The police also destroyed cannabis and poppy spread over 292 and 250 Kanals respectively.

18 cases were registered under the Excise Act related to the alcohol related seizures.

“7500 bottles of 3458 liters were seized,” the data said.

The bank accounts of repeated offenders were frozen and property confiscated.

“ 255 bank accounts with a total amount of Rs 1.94 crore was frozen. The property worth Rs 26.40 crores of the accused was attached by the police. This included 17 houses, 9 shops , 10 vehicles and cash amounting to Rs 1071,755.”

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anantnag, G V Sundeep Chakravarthy told Greater Kashmir, “ The police is committed to eradicating the drug menace from society.” While extending New Year greetings to the public, he urged for their cooperation in tackling drug trade and substance abuse.

"The anti-narcotics drive in the district will persist in the coming year," SSP Chakravarthy assured.
