Srinagar, Aug 06: Srinagar police on Tuesday said that it has taken cognisance of a sexual assault on a minor student at a private school in Srinagar.

The police statement came following information received from the administrative authority of the school regarding the sexual assault on a minor student. On Monday, several reports said a minor student of a private school in Srinagar has been subjected to physical and sexual assault by his classmates. As per the reports, the student was threatened that he would be subjected to more harassment if he talked about the assault to anyone in the school.

Upon the investigation by the school authorities, reports said that the allegations made by the student turned out to be true. In wake of this, the school administration also issued a statement and assured the parents that the incident reported from the school was being taken seriously and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) team of the institution will deal with the issue and thoroughly investigate it as well.

"We will take strict action against those involved. Parents and students are requested to remain calm," read a detailed statement issued by the school management.

On Tuesday afternoon, Srinagar police said that upon receiving the information by the administrative authority of a particular school regarding the sexual assault on a minor student, a case was registered under FIR number 44/2024 under the relevant sections of POCSO Act. “Case FIR 44/2024 under relevant sections of POCSO Act stands registered at PS Kothibagh and investigation has been taken up,” Srinagar Police said.

A top police official said that full-fledged investigations have been started in the case and further developments will be informed accordingly. "We are investigating into the matter. Lots of things have to be checked in this case. Statements of people involved will be recorded and further developments will be informed accordingly," the top police officer told Greater Kashmir.

The Police officer, however, urged media and other people to do away from mentioning name of the school, accused and victims in the case. "It is a case regarding POCSO and whosoever reveals the identity will be taken to task," the Police officer said.
