Police register FIR over alleged fake news network
Srinagar, Mar 3: Police in Srinagar on Tuesday registered a case against certain media outlets and individuals for allegedly circulating misleading and fabricated information aimed at inciting unrest in connection with protests over the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Officials said Police in Srinagar had taken serious cognisance of what it described as the deliberate dissemination of false and distorted narratives by some news channels, digital platforms and social media users.
They said that the content was being shared with the intent to disturb public order and create disharmony in society. ìSuch malicious misinformation campaigns pose a grave threat to peace, security and the integrity of the nation,î officials said.
Acting on the matter, Police registered an FIR at the Cyber Police Station under relevant legal provisions.
Several online profiles have been identified and the individuals concerned have been summoned to the Cyber Cell for questioning. ìInvestigation is actively underway, and strict legal action will follow against anyone found involved,î the spokesperson said.
The Police also said that some prominent individuals were attempting to provoke activities that could disturb peace and public order.
ìAll such actions are under close watch, and necessary measures are being taken,î the statement said.
Issuing a warning, authorities said spreading fake news, inflammatory material or unverified information would invite stringent legal consequences.
Citizens and media organisations were urged to exercise responsibility and verify facts through official and credible sources before publishing or sharing content that could affect communal harmony.
On Monday, Police had issued an advisory calling on all media organisations and news platforms to maintain the highest standards of professionalism in reporting.
The advisory urged journalists to refrain from publishing speculation or rumours, to confirm reports through authoritative sources and to avoid sensational headlines that could create unnecessary panic.
Police said responsible and accurate reporting is essential to maintaining public trust and preventing the spread of misinformation. The action comes amid massive protests across Kashmir following reports that Khamenei was killed in joint air strikes by the United States and Israel earlier this week.
