Police refute social media claims on Nowgam explosion
Srinagar, Nov 20: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday strongly refuted a series of social media posts circulating about the recent explosion at Police Station Nowgam, calling them baseless, speculative and aimed at misleading the public.
According to police, several online reports have attempted to create confusion over the nature of the incident. “These are conjectures and efforts to mislead the public,” the statement said, clarifying that the explosion on November 14 was purely accidental.
Police reiterated that the blast occurred while experts from the Forensic Science Laboratory were engaged in the process of collecting samples from a large cache of recovered explosives for forensic examination. The incident, officials stressed, took place during routine technical handling by trained personnel.
To ensure transparency and establish facts, the government has already set up a high-level inquiry committee. Constituted on November 16, the committee is headed by the Principal Secretary, Home Department, and includes the Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, the District Magistrate Srinagar, and a senior scientist from the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory, Government of India.
Officials urged the public to avoid sharing unverified claims and rely only on official information as the inquiry progresses.
