Srinagar, Sep 13: On the second death anniversary of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy.SP) Humayun Muzammil Bhat, the J&K Police solemnly honoured his memory, paying tribute to his courage, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the nation.

Dy.SP Bhat laid down his life in the line of duty on September 13, 2023, during a fierce encounter with terrorists in Kokernag area of Anantnag. His gallantry, recognized posthumously with the prestigious Kirti Chakra—India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award.

Alongside Bhat, Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Ashish Dhonchak, and Sepoy Pardeep Singh also lost their lives during the intense gunfight in the mountainous region of Kokernag, south Kashmir.

On that day in September 2023, Dy.SP Bhat was leading a joint operation involving the J&K Police and the Indian Army in the Kokernag area of Anantnag district. The operation was launched based on intelligence inputs regarding the presence of heavily armed terrorists in the area.

“All ranks of the J&K Police solemnly #commemorate the supreme #sacrifice of Deputy Superintendent of Police Humayun Muzammil Bhat, who laid down his life in the line of duty on 13th September 2023, in service to the nation at Anantnag. A dedicated officer and exemplary leader, Dy.SP Bhat demonstrated unwavering commitment & exceptional courage, leading from the front in the face of grave danger. In recognition of his valour & devotion to duty, he was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime,” Kashmir Zone Police said in a post on X.

In recognition of his exceptional courage and leadership, Dy.SP Humayun Muzammil Bhat was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra in 2024. The award, conferred by the President of India, is a testament to his indomitable spirit and dedication to duty. The citation for the Kirti Chakra highlighted Bhat’s “unwavering commitment and exceptional courage in the face of grave danger,” noting that his actions exemplified the highest traditions of the Indian police force.

The Kirti Chakra is a rare honor, reserved for acts of conspicuous gallantry in peacetime. For the J&K Police, Bhat’s recognition is a source of pride and a reminder of the sacrifices made by its personnel in the fight against terrorism. In April this year Union Home Minister, Amit Shah visited his residence near Airport and meet his family including his father retired father IGP Ghulam Hassan Bhat.
