Police arrest 2 accused involved in murder of youth in Kangan
Ganderbal, Sep 24: Police has arrested two accused persons involved in the alleged murder of a youth in Kangan area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
The deceased 22-year-old Ajaz Ahmed Rather who was suspected to have drowned in a power canal on Wednesday turned out to be a case of murder , police investigations revealed.
Officials said that the body of the victim was recovered from a power canal after strenuous efforts of the police, SDRF, NDRF and locals following a 12 hour long overnight search and rescue operation which was supervised by SSP Ganderbal Khalil Poswal along with SHO Kangan and other officials.
A case FIR No.64/2025, U/S 103 (1) BNS stands registered at PS Kangan. After legal medical formalities the body was handed over to the family for last rites. Police officials told Greater Kashmir that th investigation revealed that after committing the crime, the accused dumped the victim’s body into a canal.
SSP Ganderbal, Khalil Ahmad Poswal, said that the initial investigations reveal that Ajaz Ahmed was strangled with a wire before his body was thrown into the Power Canal. Earlier, locals believed he had drowned.
According to police, Ajaz had been playing cricket with two acquaintances, Niyazul Haq and Moieen, where a scuffle had broken out . The two accused later bought a wire, which was caught on CCTV, and used it to kill him. They then dumped his body in the canal. The wire has been recovered. Police said clear strangulation marks were found on the victim’s neck. Forensic and scientific evidence will be used to build a strong case. SSP Poswal said the case highlights the need for parents and society to monitor the behaviour of young people. SSP said that both the accused have been arrested and are now in custody, and a murder case has been registered. The Police is committed to securing justice for the victim, he added.
Meanwhile, a police statement issued by Ganderbal police said that after medico-legal formalities, the body has been handed over to the deceased family for the last rites. “During the course of preliminary investigation, a wire used in the commission of crime was recovered. Significantly, one of the close friends of the deceased has emerged as the prime eyewitness, whose statement has proven vital in cracking the case,” the statement said.” Meanwhile, a large number of women protested in Kangan against the alleged murder and sought stringent punishment to the culprits involved.
