The Government of India has initiated the process to bring back the bodies of two individuals—a girl and a youth—who drowned in the Jhelum River earlier this month and whose bodies were recovered on the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) side. The process was initiated through an Army hotline.

The deceased have been identified as Asia Bano, daughter of Mohabbat Khan, a resident of Kundibarjala, Kamalkote, and Yassir Hussain Shah, son of Mooz Ali Shah, a resident of Dhani Basgran. According to official sources, the duo jumped into the Jhelum River near Shahdara Kamalkote on March 5. The body of the girl was recovered three days ago from the PoK side, while the youth’s body was fished out on Friday morning, officials said. “We have made a request  and the body of the deceased girl is being returned on Saturday afternoon,” senior officials in Army told Greater Kashmir. “We have made the request for the second body and we are hopeful that too will be returned within a day or two,” said an Army official.
