Uri, Oct 17: The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) department in Uri, north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, has commenced the construction of protection walls at the site affected by landslides on the Lagama-Garkote road.

The stretch had suffered significant damage in April this year due to a portion being washed away by landslides triggered by heavy rains in the Lagama area.

The 7-km route was closed to heavy vehicular movement (HVM) for nearly five months and was only reopened after the removal of a 100-year-old Chinar tree.

“We have now started constructing protection walls at the affected site to prevent further damage,” Zahoor Ahmad Budoo, Executive Engineer, PMGSY Division Uri, told Greater Kashmir.

He emphasized their commitment to efficiently utilizing the approved funds, stating, “More maintenance work will be undertaken once additional funds are approved.”

The road’s closure caused various difficulties for local residents, particularly impacting patients and students.

Last month, Greater Kashmir reported that Garkote residents had requested the construction of boundary walls at the caved-in portion of the Lagama area.

Earlier, it was reported that an allocation of Rs 32 lakhs had been sanctioned to the PMGSY office in Uri for the construction of boundary walls and the maintenance of the damaged portion in the Lagama area.
