Jammu, Jan 6: Union Minister of State in PMO Jitendra Singh Monday asserted that a new chapter was etched in the history of Jammu and Kashmir and Indian Railways as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Jammu Railway Division virtually.

Addressing the gathering at the event at Jammu Railway Station, he said that the first train had arrived at the Jammu Railway Station but for as long as 50 years after that, there was no further progress.

“We had to wait for over half a century for Narendra Modi to take over as the PM and resume the rail extension work in J&K after a gap of 50 years. Some day the question would be posed why the successive governments during these long years did not give priority to this sector in J&K,” he said, in an oblique dig at political opponents.

“Were there certain elements not in support of Kashmir getting connected to the rest of India by railway and thus becoming a part of the national mainstream,” he aimed another barb at political adversaries, though obliquely.

The union minister highlighted the transformative rail infrastructure projects underway in the region, underscoring their role in connecting J&K with the national mainstream and catalysing economic and social progress.

Singh said, “The establishment of this railway division is not merely a logistical milestone but a reaffirmation of our commitment to integrate J&K with India’s economic growth trajectory.” He recalled the challenges and delays that had plagued the region’s rail connectivity in the past but noted how recent years witnessed unprecedented advancements.

Referring to the world’s highest railway bridge, standing taller than the Eiffel Tower and symbolising the technological and infrastructural might of Indian Railways, he said, “What was once deemed impossible is now a reality. This bridge stands as a testament to India’s engineering prowess and commitment to progress.”

Singh said that the New Jammu Railway Division would serve as a critical junction, facilitating faster passenger and freight movement while boosting the local economy.

He emphasised the broader expansion of rail connectivity in J&K, including the introduction of Vande Bharat trains and strategically located stoppages to cater to public demand.

The union minister also shared plans for upcoming initiatives like making smaller stations like Sangaldan vital junctions, thereby enabling seamless connectivity even in remote areas. He lauded PM Modi’s vision for rail and road infrastructure in J&K, which transformed the region into one of North India’s best-connected destinations.

“Whether by road, rail, or air, Jammu is now a hub of connectivity, set to unlock immense opportunities in tourism, trade, and employment,” Singh said.

Reflecting on the project’s significance, the minister appealed to the people to embrace this new era of connectivity, urging everyone to envision a brighter future for the next generation.

“The new railway division is not just an infrastructural achievement but a step toward fostering unity and development across the region. With these advancements, the rail network in J&K is poised to become a game-changer, bridging distances, fostering inclusivity and contributing to India’s collective progress,” he said.

“As trains begin to traverse these newly developed tracks; the dreams of a more connected, prosperous J&K edge closer to reality. The inauguration marked a pivotal moment in the government’s effort to integrate the region further into the nation’s fold, setting the stage for unprecedented growth and prosperity,” the union minister said.
