PM praises security forces for promoting Indian dog breeds in ‘Mann Ki Baat’
New Delhi, Oct 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the growing adoption and training of Indian dog breeds by the country’s security forces, saying they have shown exceptional courage, adaptability, and intelligence in service.
Addressing the nation in his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio programme, the PM recalled that nearly five years ago, he had urged citizens and security agencies to adopt native breeds, which are better suited to India’s climate and conditions.
“I am happy to say that our security agencies have made commendable efforts in this direction,” he said.
PM Modi said that the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have both expanded the presence of Indian dog breeds in their contingents.
He said that the BSF’s National Training Centre for Dogs in Tekanpur, Gwalior, has been focusing on training the Rampur Hound from Uttar Pradesh and the Mudhol Hound from Karnataka and Maharashtra.
“Here, trainers are now using technology and innovation to train the dogs more effectively,” the PM said, adding that new training manuals have been written to highlight the unique strengths of Indian breeds.
At the CRPF’s Dog Breeding and Training School in Bengaluru, several Indian breeds – including Mongrels, Mudhol Hounds, Kombai, and Pandikona - are being trained for specialised tasks.
PM Modi also recalled that at the All India Police Duty Meet held in Lucknow last year, a Mudhol Hound named Ria, trained by the BSF, had won the first prize, surpassing several foreign breeds.
