New Delhi, June 5: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Prime Minister NarendraModi participated in a tree plantation drive at BhagwanMahavirVanasthali Park in Delhi, reinforcing the government’s “Ek PedMaa Ke Naam” campaign. The initiative aims to promote tree planting as a tribute to motherhood and environmental responsibility.

Prime Minister Modi also planted a Sindoor sapling at his residence in New Delhi. The plant was gifted to him by the mothers and sisters of Kutch, Gujarat, who had displayed extraordinary courage and patriotism during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Recalling his recent visit to Gujarat, the Prime Minister said the gift of the Sindoor plant will remain a strong symbol of the bravery and inspiration of the women power of our country.

As part of the day’s activities, the Prime Minister also emphasised the government's commitment to rejuvenating the Aravalli range through the ambitious Aravalli Green Wall project. Stretching across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi, the Aravallis are among the world's oldest mountain ranges and face growing environmental degradation. Prime Minister underlined the urgent need to combat ecological threats in the region, including desertification, loss of forest cover, and deteriorating water systems. He said the government would collaborate with local administrations to arrest the eastward spread of the Thardesert, improve water retention in the area, and reduce the frequency of dust storms.

To enhance the effectiveness of afforestation efforts, the government will adopt a combination of traditional and modern plantation techniques, particularly in space-constrained urban and semi-urban zones. All plantation activities will be geo-tagged and tracked through the “MeriLiFE” portal to ensure accountability and transparency. Calling on India’s youth to join the campaign, the Prime Minister urged citizens to take active part in increasing the country’s green cover and addressing climate challenges. Sharing his thoughts on the occasion of World Environment Day, the Prime Minister posted on X: "This #WorldEnvironmentDay, let’s deepen our efforts towards protecting our planet and overcoming the challenges we face. I also compliment all those working at the grassroots to make our environment greener and better."
