The visit forms part of a review of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR), one of India’s largest infrastructure ventures and the country’s first foray into high-speed rail.

The 508-km corridor runs 352 km through Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and 156 km through Maharashtra, linking key cities such as Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Vapi, Thane and Mumbai. Designed to significantly upgrade India’s transport network, the project is being built using engineering standards comparable with those used internationally. Around 85% of the route – about 465 km - is being constructed on elevated viaducts to reduce land disruption and improve safety. Of this, 326 km has been completed so far. Work on major structures is also progressing, with 17 of 25 river bridges finished.

Once operational, the bullet train is expected to cut the Mumbai–Ahmedabad travel time to roughly two hours, offering a faster and more comfortable journey while encouraging trade, tourism and wider economic activity along the corridor. The 47-km Surat–Bilimora stretch is among the most advanced sections, with civil works and track-bed installation already completed. The design of the Surat station takes cues from the city’s diamond industry and includes spacious lounges, rest areas and retail facilities. It will be linked with the Surat Metro, local bus services and the broader Indian Railways network to ensure smooth passenger movement.
