New Delhi, Jul 12: Prime Minister NarendraModi has expressed deep pride and joy over the inclusion of the Maratha Military Landscapes of India in the UNESCO World Heritage List, calling the recognition a tribute to India’s rich historical legacy and the enduring legacy of the Maratha Empire. The newly inscribed heritage site comprises 12 imposing forts,11 situated across Maharashtra and one in Tamil Nadu, which were central to the military strategies and governance models of the Maratha rulers.

Responding to UNESCO’s announcement on social media, the Prime Minister said, “Every Indian is elated with this recognition. These ‘Maratha Military Landscapes’ include 12 majestic forts... When we speak of the glorious Maratha Empire, we associate it with good governance, military strength, cultural pride and emphasis on social welfare. The great rulers inspire us with their refusal to bow to any injustice.”

Encouraging people to connect with the country’s past, PM Modi urged citizens to visit the forts and immerse themselves in the legacy of the Maratha Empire. He also shared personal memories from his 2014 visit to Raigad Fort, where he paid tribute to ChhatrapatiShivajiMaharaj, describing the moment as one he would “always cherish.” The Maratha Military Landscapes were recommended for inscription owing to their unique hill-fort architecture, strategic planning, and cultural significance in resisting colonial powers.
