PM Modi’s vision shaping J&K’s new era: LG Manoj Sinha
Sonamarg, Jan 13: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Monday hailed the vision and leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, crediting him for J&K’s remarkable progress and development.
Speaking at the inauguration of the much-anticipated Sonamarg Tunnel in Ganderbal district, LG Sinha described the event as a watershed moment in J&K’s history.
“With the opening of the Sonamarg Tunnel, a new chapter has begun in the history of J&K. I am grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji for fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of the people of this Union Territory and creating an environment that enables the common man to flourish and live a dignified life,” he said.
Lifeline for J&K
Highlighting the tunnel’s importance, the LG called it the “lifeline for J&K,” emphasising its role in enabling year-round connectivity to the scenic Sonamarg.
“This tunnel will be a game changer for the local economy, boost winter tourism, and create new opportunities for livelihood and trade in the region,” he said, adding that such transformative projects were central to the government’s commitment to rapid and inclusive development in J&K.
Tourism over Terrorism
LG Sinha underscored the shift in J&K’s narrative, from being a region plagued by terrorism to one thriving on tourism.
“J&K has always been described as heaven in books. PM Modi has turned that into a reality. Today, instead of terrorism, tourism is being discussed,” he said, pointing to the record-breaking influx of tourists.
“In 2024, J&K welcomed 2.35 crore tourists, including a 300 percent increase in foreign visitors. This transformation highlights the trust and confidence people have in visiting this beautiful land,” the LG said.
Infrastructure Milestones
He detailed the government’s significant infrastructure achievements under the PM’s leadership, emphasising the role of connectivity in fostering growth.
“Around Rs 1.5 lakh crore worth of road and highway projects are underway in J&K,” LG Sinha said. “Work is progressing rapidly on projects like the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, Baramulla-Kupwara-Trehgam National Highway, and several others aimed at strengthening road connectivity across J&K.”
He said that construction of eight major tunnel projects was moving at a brisk pace, with completion expected by December 2025.
“Work on the Sudhmahadev-Dranga Tunnel and Singhpora-Velu Tunnel is also set to begin soon,” the LG said.
Honouring Workers
He paid homage to the seven workers who lost their lives in a terrorist attack during the construction of the tunnel.
“Their sacrifices will never be forgotten. Today, we not only celebrate a developmental milestone but also honour their memory,” LG Sinha said.
He also lauded the strategic significance of the under-construction Zojila Tunnel, expected to be completed by 2026, which will ensure year-round connectivity to Ladakh and bolster the movement of armed forces.
Sonamarg Tunnel: A Marvel of Engineering
The LG said that the 12-km-long Sonamarg Tunnel, constructed at a cost of over Rs 2700 crore, comprises a 6.4 km main tunnel, an egress tunnel, and approach roads.
“Situated at an altitude of over 8650 feet, the tunnel will bypass landslide-prone and avalanche-prone areas, ensuring uninterrupted and safer access to the strategically vital Ladakh region,” he said.
LG Sinha expressed optimism about the upcoming completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link, which he said would mark the ealization of the dream to connect Kashmir to Kanyakumari through an integrated railway network.
Vision for the Future
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to uplifting every citizen of J&K.
“Under PM Modi’s leadership, we are witnessing unprecedented development, not just in infrastructure but across sectors like agriculture, horticulture, and grassroots democracy,” the LG said. “This tunnel is not just a road but a path to prosperity, hope, and a brighter future for the people of J&K.”
