PM Modi slams religion critics, hails Mahakumbh as symbol of unity

New Delhi, Feb 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized political leaders who mock religion, accusing them of attempting to divide society and weaken India's cultural roots. Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Bageshwar Dham Medical and Science Research Institute in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, PM Modi said that such individuals, at times, even receive foreign support to further their agenda. The event was attended by Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Chhaganbhai Patel, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and other dignitaries.

The Prime Minister remarked that these days there was a class of political leaders who ridiculed religion and were involved in separating people. He added that at times, there was support to such individuals from foreign entities as well to weaken the nation and religion.

He further said that the people who abhor Hindu religion have existed since a long time in various forms. The Prime Minister highlighted the persistent attacks on our beliefs, traditions, and temples and remarked that these elements attack our saints, culture, and principles.

They target our festivals, customs, and rituals, and even dare to defame the inherently progressive nature of our religion and culture. PM Modi highlighted their agenda to divide our society and break its unity. In this context, he highlighted the efforts of Dhirendra Shastri, who has been raising awareness about the mantra of unity in the country for a long time.

Modi announced that Dhirendra Shastri had taken another pledge for the welfare of society and humanity in the form of establishing a cancer institute. Consequently, in Bageshwar Dham, the blessings of devotion, nourishment, and a healthy life will now be available, he added.

Mahakumbh: A Celebration of unity and faith

Referring to the ongoing Mahakumbh, PM Modi called it a “Maha Kumbh of Unity”, where millions of devotees have gathered to seek blessings. He highlighted the selfless service of sanitation workers, police personnel, and volunteers, thanking them for ensuring a smooth and sacred experience for the pilgrims.

He also pointed out that while the Mahakumbh is widely discussed, there is another significant initiative happening alongside it—the ‘Netra Maha Kumbh’—where over 200,000 eye check-ups have been conducted, around 150,000 people have received free medicines and glasses, and nearly 16,000 patients have been referred for cataract and other surgeries.

He praised the role of saints in organizing large-scale health and service initiatives, with thousands of doctors and volunteers participating selflessly.

He asserted that India’s festivals and pilgrimages have always been a force for unity, service, and devotion. “For centuries, our temples, monasteries, and sacred sites have served as centers of both spiritual guidance and social welfare. Whether it's healthcare, education, or charity, religious institutions have played a crucial role in nation-building.”

The Prime Minister emphasized that Indian religious institutions have historically been more than places of worship. “Our sages gave us Ayurveda and Yoga, which are now recognized worldwide. They taught us that true religion is serving others and relieving their suffering,” he said.

He pointed out how religious organizations manage some of the largest hospitals and research institutes in India, providing free or affordable treatment to millions of people. He cited Chitrakoot, a sacred site in Bundelkhand, as an example of how temples are actively involved in medical and social services.

PM Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to making healthcare accessible for all. “Before 2014, poor families feared medical expenses more than illness itself. A serious disease could push an entire family into financial ruin,” he said, recalling his own experiences growing up in a poor household.
