New Delhi, Dec 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in the virtual event “Mazdooron Ka Hit Mazdooron ko Samarpit” where he handed over a cheque amounting to approximately Rs 224 crore to settle the long-standing dues of the Hukumchand Mill workers.

The ceremony marked the resolution of the protracted demands of the workers who had been entangled in a legal battle since the closure of the Hukumchand Mill in Indore in 1992.

The Madhya Pradesh Government played a pivotal role in facilitating a comprehensive settlement package, involving upfront payment of all dues, acquisition of the mill land, and its transformation into a mixed residential and commercial space.

During the program, Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for a 60 MW Solar power plant in Khargone district. This initiative, spearheaded by the Indore Municipal Corporation, is projected to save approximately Rs 4 crore per month in electricity bills and is estimated to cost Rs 308 crore.

To fund the construction of the solar plant, the Indore Municipal Corporation issued green bonds worth Rs 244 crore, making it the first urban body in the country to do so. The overwhelming response saw subscriptions from people across 29 states, amounting to about Rs 720 crore, three times the initial value issued.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the years of struggle by the Hukumchand Mill workers and expressed satisfaction that the event coincided with the birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

He emphasized the commitment of the newly elected government in Madhya Pradesh to the welfare of the labour force and expressed confidence in receiving their blessings.

The Prime Minister lauded the Madhya Pradesh government's efforts to uplift the poor, youth, women, and farmers, affirming that the empowerment of workers is a priority for a prosperous India.

Speaking about the state's natural beauty and cultural heritage, the Prime Minister cited examples like Asia's largest operational Gobardhan Plant and the development of EV charging infrastructure. He emphasized the government's commitment to environmental protection, as evident in the usage of Green Bonds to finance the new solar power plant.

The Prime Minister also tweeted on “X” saying “The settlement of long pending demands of Hukumchand Mill workers of Indore is a significant moment.”
