PM Modi meets Argentine President Javier Milei during historic visit to Buenos Aires
New Delhi, Jul 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President of Argentina, Javier Milei, on Saturday during his official visit to Buenos Aires, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years. Upon arrival, PM Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome and warmly received by President Milei at Casa Rosada, the Presidential Palace. The visit is part of the Prime Minister’s five-nation tour and marks his third stop. From Argentina, he will travel to Brazil to attend the BRICS Summit.
The visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Argentina, making it a milestone year for bilateral ties.
The two leaders held talks in both restricted and delegation-level formats, reviewing the full spectrum of bilateral relations. They discussed enhancing cooperation in areas including critical minerals, oil and gas, defence, nuclear energy, agriculture, science and technology, the use of drones in agriculture, fisheries, power transmission monitoring, ICT, Digital Public Infrastructure, UPI, space, railways, pharmaceuticals, sports, and people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Modi emphasised the need to diversify the bilateral trade basket and deepen economic engagement. Both leaders also discussed the expansion of the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement. Prime Minister Modi thanked President Milei for Argentina’s strong condemnation of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and its solidarity with India in the global fight against terrorism. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation. They agreed to continue working closely to deepen the strategic partnership and jointly advocate for the interests of the Global South on international platforms. Before concluding his visit, Prime Minister Modi paid floral tributes at the busts of Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore in Buenos Aires. President Milei thanked the Prime Minister for his historic visit and accepted an invitation to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
