PM Modi launches Rs 5,400-Crore development projects in Durgapur, West Bengal

New Delhi, Jul 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation stone, inaugurated, and dedicated to the nation infrastructure projects worth over Rs 5,400 crore in Durgapur, West Bengal. The projects span the oil and gas, power, rail, and road sectors, and aim to boost regional connectivity, industrial capacity, and employment generation. Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister said the projects will reinforce Durgapur’s identity as a Steel City, enhance gas-based infrastructure, and promote clean energy and industrial growth.

He emphasized that these developments are aligned with the vision of “Make in India, Make for the World” and will play a key role in strengthening West Bengal’s contribution to national progress.

The event saw the launch of key projects including the Rs 1,950 crore Bharat Petroleum City Gas Distribution project in Bankura and Purulia, the Rs 1,190 crore Durgapur–Kolkata section of the Urja Ganga pipeline, and over Rs 1,450 crore worth of flue gas desulphurization systems at two thermal power plants. These efforts are expected to expand natural gas access, reduce pollution, and generate jobs. In the rail sector, the Prime Minister inaugurated the doubling of the 36-km Purulia–Kotshila line and two new road overbridges in Paschim Bardhaman, significantly improving regional logistics and safety. The Prime Minister also highlighted the broader transformation in infrastructure under his government, pointing to advances in housing, railways, digital connectivity, and clean energy, while reiterating the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047.Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and Shantanu Thakur, and BJP state president Dr. Sukanta Majumdar were present at the event.
