New Delhi, Jul 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives in Malé on Friday, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. He participated in the national festivities as the 'Guest of Honour' at the invitation of Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. PM Modi and President Muizzu jointly witnessed the ceremonial parade at Republic Square, which featured the Maldivian National Defence Forces and local cultural groups.

The Prime Minister conveyed warm wishes to the government and people of the Maldives and expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended to him. His presence at the event marks a significant moment in India-Maldives ties, as 2025 also commemorates 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two neighbours. In a message on X after completing his two day visit, PM Modi said, “as I conclude this productive visit to the Maldives, I extend my heartfelt thanks to President Muizzu, the Government and people of the Maldives for their warmth. I am deeply honoured to have witnessed the 60th Independence Day celebrations. The productive talks with President Muizzu will add significant energy to our bilateral relations.
