PM Modi, Jaishankar meet US Ambassador-designate
New Delhi, Oct 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed the US Ambassador-designate to India, Sergio Gor, expressing confidence that his tenure would further deepen ties between the two countries.
In a message on X, the Prime Minister said, “Glad to receive Mr. Sergio Gor, Ambassador-designate of the US to India. I’m confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.”
Amb Gor, one of the youngest American ambassadors appointed to India, is currently on a visit to the country from October 9 to 14, accompanied by US Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J. Rigas. During the visit, he is meeting senior Indian leaders and officials to discuss a wide range of bilateral, regional, and global issues aimed at reinforcing cooperation in defence, trade, technology, and the Indo-Pacific.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met Mr. Gor in New Delhi, highlighting the importance of the partnership. “Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance. Wish him the best for his new responsibility,” Dr. Jaishankar said on X.
In a separate meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also held talks with the US envoy. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X, “@SergioGor earlier today. They had a productive exchange on the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and its shared priorities. Foreign Secretary wished Amb-designate Gor all success for his assignment.”
According to a statement released by the US government, Ambassador Gor and Deputy Secretary Rigas are engaging with several Indian counterparts during their visit. “The United States will continue to work with India to strengthen our strategic partnership and promote a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” the statement said. The meetings mark an important moment at a time when the relationship between India and the US is under strain. This series of meetings, the political observer suggests, can help rebuild trust as both nations are eager to expand collaboration in emerging technologies, clean energy, and regional security. The India–US partnership, which has continued to evolve over the last two decades, is now a defining relationship of the 21st century.
