PM Modi condemns attack on Chief Justice Gavai in SC premises
New Delhi, Oct 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday strongly condemned the attack on Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice B R Gavai inside the Supreme Court premises, calling it “utterly condemnable” and “an act that has angered every Indian.”
In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister said, “Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable. I appreciated the calm displayed by Justice Gavai in the face of such a situation. It highlights his commitment to values of justice and strengthening the spirit of our Constitution.”
According to PTI, the incident occurred during court proceedings when a lawyer allegedly attempted to hurl a shoe towards the Chief Justice while the Bench led by him was hearing the mentioning of cases. Security personnel immediately intervened and restrained the lawyer before he could carry out the act.
Eyewitnesses said the lawyer, while being escorted out, shouted slogans referring to the protection of Sanatan Dharma. Despite the disruption, CJI Gavai remained composed and urged the lawyers to continue proceedings, stating that such incidents would not distract the court from its work. The Supreme Court security unit has launched an inquiry into the incident. Authorities are verifying details about the lawyer and the motive behind the attempted attack.
