PM Modi Concludes Productive Japan Visit, Heads to China for SCO Summit
New Delhi, Aug 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday wrapped up his official visit to Japan, describing it as “highly productive” and charting the way forward for deeper cooperation across multiple sectors. He has now emplaned for Tianjin, China, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, the Ministry of External Affairs said. In a message on X, the Prime Minister thanked his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba, the government and people of Japan for their warmth. “This visit to Japan will be remembered for the productive outcomes which will benefit the people of our nations,” he posted.
During the visit on second day, PM Modi held wide-ranging engagements, including a special interaction with 16 Governors from across Japan. He underlined the importance of expanding ties beyond Tokyo and Delhi, encouraging stronger partnerships between Indian states and Japanese prefectures. Stressing the new State-Prefecture Partnership Initiative announced at the 15th Annual Summit, he called for greater collaboration in trade, technology, tourism, skills, start-ups, and cultural exchanges.
Later, accompanied by Prime Minister Ishiba, PM Modi travelled by bullet train to Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture. The two leaders visited Tokyo Electron Miyagi Ltd (TEL Miyagi), a major player in the global semiconductor sector. They were briefed on TEL’s advanced manufacturing capabilities and its ongoing collaborations with India, highlighting opportunities to strengthen cooperation in semiconductor supply chains, fabrication and testing.
PM also met Indian locomotive pilots undergoing training at the East Japan Railway Company and reviewed the new ALFA-X bullet train. Pm Modi noted the complementarities between India’s emerging semiconductor ecosystem and Japan’s technological strengths, reaffirming commitments under the India–Japan Semiconductor Supply Chain Partnership.
The joint factory visit and railway interaction highlighted the growing convergence between the two countries on building resilient supply chains and advanced technology linkages. Prime Minister Ishiba hosted a lunch for Mr. Modi in Sendai, attended by the Governor of Miyagi Prefecture and other dignitaries. The visit, officials said, reaffirmed the “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” between India and Japan, built on civilisational ties and contemporary economic and security cooperation.
