PM Modi calls for peace in Manipur
New Delhi, Sep 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged all stakeholders in Manipur to embrace peace and reconciliation, stressing that development cannot take root in an atmosphere of violence. “The land and region of Manipur is a soil of hope and aspiration,” the Prime Minister said while addressing a gathering in Churachandpur, adding that “unfortunately, violence had gripped this remarkable area.” He noted that he had met families in relief camps and expressed confidence that “a new dawn of hope and trust is arriving in Manipur.”
The Prime Minister underlined that establishing peace was vital for prosperity, pointing out that “over the past eleven years, many long-standing conflicts and disputes in the North East have been resolved.”
He urged organizations across the hills and valley to “move forward on the path of peace and fulfill their aspirations,” assuring that “the Government of India is with Manipur.” As part of rehabilitation measures, Mr. Modi announced a special package of nearly Rs 3,000 crore, including Rs 500 crore earmarked for displaced families, and the construction of 7,000 new houses. He also emphasized tribal development, citing new Eklavya Model Residential Schools and the Dharati Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan, which covers more than 500 villages in the state.
Launching projects worth over Rs 7300 crore, the Prime Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to boost connectivity. “The Jiribam–Imphal railway line will soon connect the capital Imphal to the national rail network,” he said, adding that the government is investing Rs 22,000 crore in the project. He also noted rapid progress on highway projects and the expansion of tap water and electricity access. Calling Manipur “a jewel that will enhance the brilliance of the entire North East,” the Prime Minister concluded: “We are working with the goal of making Manipur a symbol of peace, prosperity and progress.” Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and other dignitaries were present at the event.
