He particularly added joy and laughter to countless lives through his unforgettable performances. His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.” Asrani, best remembered for his iconic portrayal of the eccentric jailer in “Sholay” (1975) and a long list of memorable comic roles, passed away in a hospital here on Monday, his manager said. He was 84. Actor Raza Murad paid an emotional tribute to his co-star, calling Asrani his “guru” and a “gifted all-rounder” who could effortlessly make audiences laugh and engage with his performances. “Asrani sahab was a versatile actor with impeccable comic timing. He was a complete entertainer whose talent, humility, and warmth will remain etched forever in Indian cinema,” Murad told PTI Videos.

Director Ramesh Sippy, who helmed “Sholay,” told the Press Trust of India that Asrani would forever be remembered for the role of the dictatorial jailer in the classic film. “He did a lot of work, but this role stands out. It’s a role he was born to play,” Sippy said, adding that he had met the actor recently and that Asrani seemed “absolutely fine.” “It feels sudden... I will long remember him. But saying all this on a day like this doesn’t feel good. It feels maybe that’s the best way to remember him,” Sippy told PTI. Asrani, whose career spanned over five decades, appeared in more than 350 films across Hindi, Gujarati, and other Indian languages. Known for his sharp timing and expressive range, he leaves behind a legacy that continues to shape Indian comedy and character acting.
