Anantnag, Dec 1: With the spurt in traffic-related accidental deaths and injuries in which the victims and causes are the motorcycle riders, the district administration Anantnag has taken certain effective measures, particularly banning the sale of petrol to motorcycles carrying helmet-less riders.

An official spokesman in a statement issued here said that invoking the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, DC Anantnag Syed Fakhruddin Hamid has instructed for strict adherence to this issued order which would empower the Tehsil Magistrates to inspect the footage of any petrol station to trace any violation in this regard which according to the order would be dealt seriously under the law.

The civil society at large while appreciating this order has asked for more such steps to save more precious lives who succumb to traffic-related accidents and offences.

President of Jamia Masjid Aishmuqam and Chairman of the local civil society Ghulam Muhammad Dar urged the administration to devise a method to keep the lanes, by-lanes, and road links clear of parked vehicles which is, at times, the reason for such accidents and traffic jams.

Sofi Sajad, a youth from Anantnag appealed to the district administration to instruct the Urban Local Bodies, Police, Traffic Police, and the tehsil administration to keep a vigil on the menace of rash driving as it is witnessed in rural areas more because of the less accountability and vigil.

Arfaat Sofi, former chairman of Aishmuqam Municipal Council also has the same opinion as he has appealed to the Wakaf and other departments to keep the Ziarat Road Aishmuqam and other such roads clear from parked vehicles and called for maintaining speed limit on such roads to avoid accidents.

Sheikh Tariq, former president of Anantnag Working Journalist Association while appreciating this order asked for a social campaign to address the issue as the family culture and societal grooming would surely help educate young bikers to understand the consequences of rash driving and other such activities.

The district administration Anantnag, especially DC Anantnag S F Hamid is known for such innovative and novel concepts for the good and facilitation of commoners.
