Srinagar, Apr 26: CPI(M) senior leader and MLA Kulgam M Y Tarigami on Saturday said that the way people in Kashmir have condemned the recent Pahalgam attack was an unprecedented gesture, adding that at the same time central government must ensure safety of Kashmiris living in outside states, especially when there have been efforts to target them.

“It is not appropriate to say who died in the attack. Whosoever died was our own. From political leaders, students, clerics to members of civil society, all have condemned the violence tooth and nail. Now, the government must safeguard residents of J&K in outside states,” Tarigami said while addressing media persons.

He said that the all parties meeting convened by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently, was a good example of a unified voice against violence. “The same parties which fought with each other in the elections recently, this time got together for this cause irrespective of being either from Jammu or the Kashmir region. Everyone condemned the Pahalgam incident and expressed grief with kith and kin of the deceased,” said Tarigami.

He said it was laudable that people of Kashmir have openly condemned the carnage, adding that “in testing times, common people not only condemned it but kept their nerve.” He said even though people in Kashmir have seen sufferings during the last three decades, adding that it was for the first time when they stood firm and sent across a strong message to the outside world. “It is a trying time and being resolute while performing our individual duties is a major task. In these testing times, it was heartening that some members of civil society even in Jammu opened their doors for Kashmiris who had come under an attack,” added Tarigami.

He said the people who are playing “politics of hate” are the ones whose survival is dependent on “promoting hatred.” “Kashmiris either studying or working outside have been targeted in Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and other parts. It is imminent that all of us work together to beat such hatred. I appeal the Government of India that saving our own citizens is equally important as punishing perpetrators of the Pahalgam incident,” said Tarigami.
