People with grievous cases detained: Police
Srinagar, Sep 14: In preparation for the upcoming J&K Assembly elections, Police in Srinagar confirmed that individuals with a history of “grievous criminal cases” had been placed under “preventive custody” to ensure a peaceful and fair electoral process.
This move comes amid growing concerns about the potential disruption of the elections by certain elements of J&K.
Police clarified that only individuals with a prior record of heinous criminal activities, particularly those involved in incidents of law and order disruption, had been detained.
“These individuals include Over Ground Workers (OGWs) of terrorist organisations, terror associates, and those previously involved in terror modules,” it said.
The Police said that the preventive detentions were being carried out in strict accordance with the law, ensuring that all procedures were followed diligently.
According to the Police, such preventive actions are part of the legal measures available to law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and stability during sensitive times like elections.
These steps are aimed at preventing any attempt to disrupt the electoral process and ensure that people can vote without fear of intimidation or violence.
The Police said that the individuals in question had a proclivity for causing disturbances during the electoral process, making it necessary to take preemptive actions.
It said that the detentions thus were a proactive effort to safeguard the integrity of the upcoming elections and to maintain law and order across J&K.
The Police reassured that all actions were being taken with full adherence to the law, and the detentions were solely focused on those with established criminal antecedents.
As the assembly polls approach, security forces across J&K have heightened their vigilance to prevent any untoward incident.
The preventive detentions are part of a broader security plan to ensure that the elections proceed smoothly, with voters feeling safe and free to exercise their democratic rights, the Police said.
The Police in Srinagar reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and stability, vowing to take all necessary actions to thwart any attempts at disrupting the democratic.
