The company, under the aegis of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is transforming the inner walls of the twin tunnels at Peerah in Ramban into a vibrant canvas of art and heritage.

According to Ravi Gupta, Project Manager at Gammon Engineers and Contractors Private Limited, the initiative is a goodwill endeavour aimed at enriching the experience of travellers and tourists passing through the tunnels.

“The idea is to attract tourists and give them a glimpse of the breathtaking destinations and rich culture they will encounter as they move ahead into the Kashmir valley,” Gupta said.

A talented team of artists from Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh), Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar has been specially commissioned to undertake the project. These artists are painting the inner walls of both tunnels, covering 50 meters from each entrance and exit point. The intricate wall art will depict themes of Kashmir’s natural beauty, traditional lifestyle, historic monuments, handicrafts, and cultural diversity — serving as both an aesthetic enhancement and an educational display for visitors.

The Peerah twin tunnels form an important part of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, ensuring smooth traffic movement through the hilly terrain.

The first tunnel (T-1) carries upward traffic, stretches 925 meters, while the second tunnel (T-2), for downward traffic, is 797 meters long.

These tunnels not only play a vital role in improving road connectivity and reducing travel time but are now also set to become a symbol of artistic innovation and regional pride

A blend of infrastructure and art, this initiative reflects Gammon Engineers’ commitment to combining engineering excellence with social and cultural sensitivity. The company aims to create a welcoming atmosphere for travellers while promoting the unique identity of Kashmir through visual storytelling.

Locals and commuters have praised the effort, noting that the artwork would add a sense of warmth and beauty to the long mountain drive.

“It’s refreshing to see art and culture being celebrated even in places like tunnels. It makes the journey more enjoyable,” said a traveller passing through the site.

As the work progresses, the Peerah tunnels are expected to emerge not just as an infrastructural marvel, but also as a moving art gallery, showcasing the essence of Kashmir to all who pass through.
