Paras Health Srinagar treats woman’s rare hormonal disorder through minimally invasive surgery
Srinagar, May 15: In a landmark medical achievement, Paras Health Srinagar has successfully treated a 36-year-old woman suffering from a rare hormonal disorder using a minimally invasive surgical procedure, setting a new benchmark for advanced endocrine and urological care in the Valley.
The patient had long been grappling with multiple health complications including severe hormonal imbalance, uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, and unusual physical changes. Despite consulting various specialistsóincluding an ophthalmologist who operated on the fat around her eyes without comprehensive evaluation, and an endocrinologist who managed her symptoms with medicationóher underlying condition remained undiagnosed.
The breakthrough came when the woman visited Paras Health Srinagar, where Dr Mohsin Bin Mushtaq Shah, Consultant, Internal Medicine, conducted a detailed clinical evaluation.
She was admitted for further investigations.
A series of targeted tests and imaging studies led Dr Mohsin to suspect Cushingís Syndromeóa rare disorder caused by excess cortisol in the body. The tests confirmed the presence of a cortisol-secreting adrenal adenoma.
Recognising the need for surgical intervention, Dr Mohsin referred the patient to the experienced surgical team led by Dr Mufti Mahmood Ahmed, a veteran urological surgeon with over 35 years of experience.
The team opted for a laparoscopic adrenalectomy, an advanced keyhole surgery that involves small incisions, resulting in quicker recovery, reduced pain, and fewer complications.
Dr Mufti, assisted by Dr Ishaq Nabi (Consultant, GI & Laparoscopic Surgery), successfully performed a laparoscopic right adrenalectomy.
The anaesthesia team, led by Dr Khawar and Dr Zahid, ensured the patientís safety and comfort throughout the two-hour procedure, which was completed with minimal complications.
Speaking on the successful outcome, Dr Mufti said, ìThe use of laparoscopic surgery in such endocrine disorders greatly benefits the patient by minimising post-operative discomfort and recovery time. This case reflects the advanced capabilities of our surgical and diagnostic teams at Paras Health Srinagar.î
Post-surgery, the patient showed immediate clinical improvement.
Her cortisol levels normalized within days, and her blood pressure and blood sugar levels began to stabilise.
Doctors expect a gradual reversal of other symptoms, including facial fat accumulation and weight gain, in the coming months.
Dr Mohsin emphasised the importance of timely diagnosis in managing endocrine disorders.
Many patients live with unexplained symptoms like hypertension, weight gain, and abnormal fat distribution, unaware that a hormonal imbalance could be the underlying cause. Early and accurate evaluation can lead to life-changing outcomes, he said.
The patientís post-operative recovery was meticulously monitored by a dedicated team of resident doctors and specialists, including Dr Muzaffar, Dr Khalid, Dr Shabeena, Dr Asrar, Dr Bashir Laway, and Dr Mahroosa, Senior Consultant Endocrinology.
Their coordinated efforts, supported by a skilled nursing team, ensured a smooth recovery and underscored the strength of multidisciplinary collaboration at Paras Health Srinagar.
This case adds to the growing list of complex procedures being successfully conducted at the hospital, which is fast emerging as a centre of excellence in minimally invasive and specialized care in the region.
