Panic grips Uri area as bear attack leaves several animals dead

Baramulla, Dec 14: Panic gripped the Jabla Kamalkote in Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district after 25 sheep were found dead in a bear attack on Wednesday night.

An official said that a bear attacked a cattle shed belonging to a local resident, Muhammad Lateef, on Wednesday night and left at least 25 sheep dead and caused injury to several others.

The incident is the second of its kind in the last few days. Earlier, in a similar incident, 5 sheep were killed in a bear attack in the same area.

The repeated attacks by the wild animal has created panic in the area. The locals here said following the incident, the residents of the area are reeling under extreme fear and are unable to venture out from their houses after dusk.

“The wildlife department must take action and ensure the bear is caught before it starts attacking the humans,” said Jamshed Ahmad, Sarpanch Jabla Uri.

The Uri area has in the past witnessed several bear attacks which resulted in the death of several persons.
