Overloading | Police seize 14 vehicles, challan 227; 2 drivers arrested in Kishtwar

Ramban, Nov 17: In a proactive move to tackle the persistent issue of overloading in passenger vehicles, Police in Kistwar started a special drive to curb the menace of overloading across the district on Friday.

In this connection 14 vehicles found in violation of prescribed load limits were seized, 227 vehicles were challaned for violating traffic norms while two FIRs were lodged and two drivers were arrested for endangering the lives of commuters.

Police said that the drive to curb the menace of overloading in passenger vehicles was launched on the directions of SSP Kishtwar Khalil Poswal.

The SSP issued a stern warning to all vehicle operators in the district, emphasisng that strict action would be taken against those involved in overloading.

He highlighted the direct and indirect role of traffic violators in causing fatal road accidents, resulting in the loss of precious lives.

Expressing concern over underage driving, SSP Khalil Poswal urged parents to refrain from allowing their underage children to operate scooters, motorcycles, and other vehicles.

The drive against overloading is part of a broader effort to instill a sense of responsibility among road users and promote adherence to traffic rules.

SSP Poswal also appealed to passengers to make a short video of overloaded vehicles and send it to 9906154100.

“Informants will be rewarded suitably, and their identity will be kept a secret,” he said.

SSP Poswal said that the drive against traffic violations would continue.

Thirty-eight people including a woman and children died while 18 others sustained injuries when an overloaded bus plunged into a gorge in the Trungul area of Doda on the Batote-Doda-Kishtwar National Highway on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Police issued here said that going tough against the traffic violators, Police in Reasi under the supervision of SSP Reasi Amit Gupta also launched a special drive and intensified checking against traffic violators on all vulnerable routes throughout the district.

During the special drive, Police in Reasi challaned 272 vehicles and seized 74 vehicles on all routes throughout the district involved in traffic violations, especially overloading, without a helmet, triple riding, without wearing a seat belt, rash driving and other offences.

A medical checkup of 55 drivers was also conducted in which various health parameters were checked under the supervision of DySP Headquarters Reasi, Neeraj Padyar along with SHO Police Station Reasi Inspector Vijay Sharma.

All the pillion riders were briefed and made aware of the benefits of wearing headgear while driving.

They were also advised to follow the traffic rules, avoid rash driving, and not to drive after consuming liquor.

Police warned the traffic violators to shun the practice of overloading and other traffic violations which was not only risky for them but also endangered the lives of other people.

Police also appealed to the people to cooperate with the Police and provide information and inputs, if any driver, especially drivers of passenger vehicles were noticed carrying overload or driving rashly and negligently so that stringent action would be taken by the Police.

The identity of the informer will be kept secret and prompt action will be taken by Police against the traffic violators,” the Police statement said.
