Over 2.17 lakh recruited in UP Police since 2017: Yogi
Lucknow, Aug : Uttar Pradesh has seen record recruitment in its police force, with more than 2.17 lakh personnel inducted since 2017, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Sunday. Addressing an appointment letter distribution ceremony for 1,494 newly selected assistant operators in the UP Police Telecom Department, the Chief Minister said that the large-scale hiring reflects the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and strengthening law and order. The event, held at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow, also marked the government's broader achievement of offering over 8.5 lakh government jobs across departments, claimed to be the highest in the country.
Yogi Adityanath stated that reforms in the recruitment process, beginning with the revamp of the Police Recruitment Board, had turned Uttar Pradesh into a national model for fair and merit-based appointments.
The Chief Minister said the police recruitment drive was not just about numbers but about rebuilding public trust and enhancing the capacity of the force. From limited infrastructure that could earlier train just 3,000 recruits, the state now trains over 60,000 personnel annually within its own institutions.
Highlighting the modernisation of the police force, he said new commissionerates have been created in seven cities and new police lines and headquarters built in ten districts. Residential and administrative facilities for the police have also been significantly upgraded, with the best buildings in several districts now belonging to police barracks.
Yogi Adityanath also reiterated the government’s commitment to inclusive recruitment, noting that 20% of posts are reserved for women in the police force. Among the newly appointed assistant operators, around 300 are women. A similar 20% reservation has been approved for Agniveer recruits, allowing trained youth from the armed forces to join the police service.
