‘Our voice in BCCI’: Ex-J&K cricketers back Mithun Manhas’ leadership
Srinagar, Oct 2: The elevation of Mithun Manhas as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sparked optimism across Jammu and Kashmir’s cricket fraternity. Former players, coaches, and administrators say his long association with J&K cricket positions him uniquely to drive reforms, infrastructure development, and opportunities for aspiring cricketers.
‘A gem of a person with vast experience’
Former J&K cricketer and current coach Huwaid Ronga described Manhas as “a gem of a person” whose journey from player to coach, mentor, and administrator has been marked by dedication and discipline.
“Mithun bhai knows every aspect of cricket. He understands hurdles, and he has vast experience, and that is why he has reached this position. This is the biggest achievement for J&K cricket,” Ronga said.
He added that the perception of J&K cricket being “far behind in infrastructure and development” can now change.
“He knows where there is lag, what resources are needed, and how to develop talent. Even with limited resources, he has managed a lot over the last 4–5 years. From just 3–4 qualified coaches five years ago, we now have 60–65,” Ronga said.
He also expressed confidence and hope that J&K cricket should remain a priority for Manhas, despite his responsibilities across India.
“Now he is the BCCI president. He will oversee all states, but we hope that J&K should fall under priority. We hope he will bring better plans and work for JKCA,” he said.
Future opportunities for players and infrastructure
Former JKCA pacer and prominent cricketing figure Abdul Qayoom Bagaw echoed the sentiment, calling Manhas’ appointment “a full package for J&K cricket.”
“Every call, every administrative decision, every coaching initiative, he has done it all. He has always thought about how our players can move beyond participation and actually play for India,” Bagaw said.
J&K’s former speedster Samiullah Beigh highlighted Manhas’ domestic experience as a JKCA administrator, who helped J&K qualify seven times for knockouts in different categories.
He said that as BCCI president, he will take Indian cricket in general, and J&K cricket in particular, to new heights. He, however, added that he expects a revival of club cricket, development of district stadiums, and at least two international-level facilities each in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Mithun Manhas is a domestic veteran, having tremendous knowledge about the game. Despite some disagreements with JKCA, I firmly believe that as BCCI head he would take Indian cricket in general and J&K cricket in particular to the highest levels,” Beigh said.
A hopeful future for J&K cricket
Cricket circles in J&K are optimistic that Mithun Manhas’ presidency will usher in structural improvements, better coaching networks, upgraded facilities, and increased representation of local talent in national competitions.
“This is a proud and hopeful moment for J&K cricket,” Bagaw said. “Our boys now have a mentor and leader at the top who truly understands their challenges and aspirations.”
