Orientation programme held for Hajj 2026 deputationists in New Delhi
New Delhi, Feb 16: The Ministry of Minority Affairs organised an Orientation-cum-Training Programme for Hajj deputationists for Hajj 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan. The programme was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian, marking the formal start of preparations for Hajj 2026, during which around 1.75 lakh Indian pilgrims are expected to undertake the pilgrimage.
Selected from various government organisations, the deputationists will serve for about two-and-a-half months in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under the supervision of the Consulate General of India in Jeddah, providing administrative and medical support to pilgrims.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Kurian said Hajj management is one of the largest and most complex overseas logistical operations undertaken by India. He noted that deputationists act as the face of the Government of India in Saudi Arabia and are responsible for serving thousands of pilgrims. He highlighted recent welfare measures, including special arrangements for elderly pilgrims and enhanced facilities for women travelling without a Mehram. He also emphasised coordination among ministries such as External Affairs, Home Affairs, Health and Civil Aviation, with nearly 600 officials expected to be deployed for Hajj 2026.
Secretary, Ministry of Minority Affairs, Dr C.S. Kumar said India is among the largest contributors of Hajj pilgrims globally, and preparations for Hajj 2026 have been streamlined. He stressed structured training, greater use of technology and AI-enabled systems, and the need for discipline and cultural sensitivity while serving abroad.
Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, Aseem Mahajan, underlined the importance of close coordination with Saudi authorities and the Indian missions in Jeddah and Riyadh. He also referred to India’s strong ties with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region, which hosts a large Indian diaspora.
Joint Secretary Ram Singh highlighted updated Saudi guidelines and new technological initiatives, such as the Hajj Suvidha App and smart wearable devices to improve safety and service delivery.
