Srinagar, Aug 3: SKIMS Soura commemorated the Organ Donation Day with an awareness programme and pledge ceremony.

Under the directions of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), August 3 is designated as the Indian Organ Donation Day. This year in particular, it has been decided to run a year-long public awareness campaign by the name of "Angdaan Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyaan".

As a part of this campaign, the day was celebrated as 15th Indian Organ Donation Day to commemorate the first deceased donor Organ transplant, which was also the first heart transplant performed on 3rd August 1994 in India.

On the occasion of this day an awareness program was held at SKIMS and the everlasting need about the need for Organ donation was reiterated and everyone was encouraged to be an organ donor and take a pledge for the same.

On this occasion ,Dr Arif Hamid Head of Urology and Kidney Transplant Unit told about the growing demand of organs and need to enhance cadaveric donation. He said about going beyond the symbolic slogans and acting practically on the issues of organ shortage.  Prof Imtiaz Wani from the Department of Nephrology stressed about role of administration in addressing the issue of brain death certification.

Dr Muzafar Maqsood Wani,  Head Department of Nephrology gave a comprehensive presentation on the reasons of non-willingness on the part of people to pledge for organ donation, the functioning and working of NOTTO and SOTTO.  He further discussed the status of deceased organ donation scenario in the world as well as in India, mentioning the statistics in particular.

Dr Sameena Mufti Associate Professor in the Department of Hospital Administration appreciated the kidney transplant unit in streamlining the live kidney transplant program and striving hard to have the cadaveric transplant program in place.

She alongwith 30 doctors and paramedical staff took the pledge of donating their organs which was read by Dr Mukaresh, DM resident, who compered the event. The event was appreciated by the Director, Dean and MS of the institute.
