Bijbehara, Jan 7: On the ninth death anniversary of former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, his daughter and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti called for a renewed "healing touch" for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

"Mufti Sahib pursued a policy of healing touch, and today, the people of Jammu and Kashmir need it more than ever,” Mehbooba said. “The hearts of people are aching, and their wounds need to be healed."

She addressed the gathering at Mufti's graveyard in Darashikov Garden, where tributes were paid to the late leader.

Mehbooba cautioned against mistaking the current silence in the region for peace.

“The graveyard silence in the region cannot be equated with peace,” she said.

Reiterating her father’s belief in working within the framework of the Indian Constitution, she added: “We are not seeking the heavens but are demanding the restoration of our lost identity and dignity.”

She reaffirmed the PDP's commitment to guiding the people through the prevailing challenges while criticizing recent policies in the region.

“Why raise issues like reservations, satellite townships, and the acquisition of productive land for rail construction without consulting the people?” she asked.

Mehbooba also expressed concern over the termination of government employees in Kashmir and the economic hardships faced by the people of Jammu.

“The people of Jammu are grappling with significant business losses, and no steps are being taken to address their problems,” she said.

Highlighting the importance of trade and connectivity, she demanded the reopening of routes for economic growth.

“The routes opened by Mufti Sayeed, such as the Muzaffarabad Road and Poonch-Rawalakot Road, should be reopened. Additionally, routes like the Jammu-Sialkot Road should be revived for economic prosperity,” Mehbooba said.

She emphasized that the people are the true heirs to her father’s legacy.

“Efforts were made to weaken the PDP, but you stood by us during tough times. The party remains steadfast in fighting for your rights,” she said.

Earlier, Mehbooba, along with senior party leaders and family members, offered prayers at Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's grave to mark the occasion.
