Nubra has potential to become top tourist destination in country: LG Kavinder
Nubra (Leh), Sep 10: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, on Tuesday said Nubra Valley has the potential to emerge as one of India’s premier tourist destinations, given its breathtaking landscapes, diverse culture, and unique natural heritage. He assured that both the Government of India and the UT Administration are committed to fast-tracking Ladakh’s development with a special focus on tourism, infrastructure, and sustainable growth.
The LG was speaking at a public durbar at the SDM Conference Hall, Disket, on the first day of his maiden three-day visit to the Nubra sub-division.
The meeting was attended by EC LAHDC Leh, Ghulam Mehdi; Councillors Kunzang Lotos (Hunder), Tsering Sandup (Panamik), and Rigzin Lhundup (Tiger); SDM Nubra Mukul Beniwal; and ADDC Leh Sonam Norbu.
Painting a vivid picture of Nubra’s appeal—where cold desert sand dunes meet snow-capped peaks, visitors ride Bactrian camels, explore Buddhist treasures like Diskit Monastery, and experience Balti culture in villages like Turtuk—the LG said the Administration is determined to strengthen connectivity and tourism facilities in line with the Centre’s vision for holistic development of Ladakh.
He highlighted initiatives already underway, including the Phyang–Hunder Transmission Line to ensure an uninterrupted power supply, the operationalisation of the Thoise civil airport to link Nubra directly with the rest of the country, the opening of new tourist circuits, and the upgradation of road infrastructure for better accessibility.
Acknowledging the short working season due to harsh winters and heavy snowfall, the LG assured that the Administration is committed to providing reliable road connectivity, continuous power, 4G services, and improved healthcare and education facilities. He credited the Centre’s support and the efforts of UT officials for driving these initiatives.
The LG also reiterated the Administration’s focus on resolving key issues such as rationalising Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary boundaries, fast-tracking transmission projects, and expediting the Thoise airport project.
Earlier, local representatives apprised him of issues related to power supply, telecommunication, connectivity, healthcare facilities, and demand for a multipurpose hall.
During the visit, the LG offered prayers at Disket Monastery and the 106-ft Maitreya Buddha statue, besides visiting the Hunder Sand Dunes, where he also rode a Bactrian camel. He interacted with monks and camel owners, assuring them that their grievances would be addressed on priority.
