Washington has recently intensified criticism of nations maintaining strong economic ties with Russia, with India emerging as a key focus of U.S. attention due to its oil imports. Doval’s trip comes at a time of heightened geopolitical friction. U.S. President Donald Trump has issued repeated warnings of potential trade penalties against countries continuing energy deals with Moscow. India’s engagement with Russia, especially in the energy sector, has drawn specific scrutiny as the U.S. administration considers raising tariffs. The current global environment, shaped by the war in Ukraine and realignments in global trade, is expected to feature prominently in the Moscow discussions. India has consistently advocated for diversified energy supplies and a balanced approach to international relations. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is also expected to visit Russia later this month.
